When selecting a whole house water filter, there are several criteria to look for in order to ensure we buy the correct and good water filter for our house – flow rate, filter size, filter life and port size. We have to determine what flow rate is suitable to the house. Flow rate determines the amount of water available to run the house toilet, shower, dishwasher, etc, and may range from 15 to 40 gallons per minute (gpm) depending on the size of the household. A whole house filter system with flow rate less than 10gpm is not able to maintain uninterrupted water supply then. Read the rest of this entry »

Goji juice is made from goji berries or the wolfberries. Nutritionists have found goji berries to be one of the best food supplements as it contains much higher ratio of beta-carotene and vitamin C than oranges, and more iron than what can be found in leafy vegetables such as spinach. Apart from this, goji berries also have trace elements and minerals that help in fighting cancers, and improving immune systems. Read the rest of this entry »

The Flowering Sargent’s Snowdrift Crabapple is a great outdoor bonsai tree to give as a gift. This tree is a favorite amongst collectors because of its beautiful flowers. These little flowers are pure white, have a very nice fragrance to them, and pop up all over the tree, covering it in early spring before its leaves start to grow. Then, during the summer, small green apples appear on the tree. They will have grown to a fairly good size by the fall, when all of the leaves start to turn to autumn colors and fall off. These fruits, however, will remain on the tree during the entire winter season, which creates a very interesting looking bonsai that can bring something very different to your collection. We began hosting a poker game for our group of friends about 6 months ago. To get started we purchased a couple of poker chip sets that were a sealed product and include a cheap aluminum case. This was simply the most economical way to go, especially since we did not have a lot of money to spend and we were not sure if this game night was going to stick. Read the rest of this entry »

The baking fever has begun at our house. This last weekend we baked a batch of chocolate chip banana muffins to have for a breakfast treat and a loaf of fresh Italian bread that we enjoyed with our pasta dinner. Even today the house still smells delicious from all of the baked goods. During the fall and winter seasons we’ll end up making a lot of homemade goodies, including family favorites like pumpkin pie, cherry cheesecake, pecan pie, and German chocolate cake. I’ve purchased some good baking pans over the last few years since I’ve found the quality of the pan makes a big difference in the quality of my baking results, especially when it comes to cakes. One of my favorite purchases is my Kaiser Bakeware La Forme Perfect Nonstick Springform Pan. Read the rest of this entry »

Here’s another interesting addition to your collection of Old West gun replicas – the M1873 Lever Action Western Rifle. It also belonged to a class of rifles which used what is now referred to as “lever action” – a method used to refill the cartridges of these guns by pulling a level located near the trigger guard area of the gun. Because I choose to grow indoor bonsai, I have the luxury of a huge variety plants to choose from and I’ll always want more. There are sub-tropical shrubs and tropical trees. The foliage colors can be anything from the pale hues typical of sun lovers through to the bluish greens from the rain forests. Choose trees with leaves in different shapes, from stubby to elegantly long Many have beautiful flowers with a scent. Plus, since they’re no longer growing in the rain forest, climbing 80 feet up, but instead firmly planted inside a bonsai pot that’s even smaller than a toaster, you get to display these giants in your house. And one that will make a simply splendid gift, because it is so rarely seen is the Jaboticaba bonsai from Brazil. Read the rest of this entry »

This is one of my favorite jewelry items; a sinuous sterling silver ferret pendant from The Magic Zoo. It looks right, the proportions are perfect and the personality is right on. If I didn’t know better, I’d guess the gal that made it was a ferret owner. But the thing is that all her jewelry looks right, just like the personality of whatever animal she’s portraying. And I seriously doubt if she Merry keeps an elephant in her backyard! Read the rest of this entry »

This lesser know thirst quencher is an old, old recipe, but it’s a dandy! The surprising ingredients you use when you make Switchel are half of the fun. Don’t tell your kids what’s in those big tall glasses – let them guess. The tangy and sweet flavors seriously quench any thirst, whether you’re out playing or working. Kids and adults both will fall in love with this delightful beverage. It’s not only full of flavor, but, as my grandpa used to say, “it’s good for what ails ya”. You can drink this beverage either hot or cold, so keep this recipe handy for those dark winter nights, too. Read the rest of this entry »

I must admit that I am a bit of a coffee fanatic. I can’t remember the last time that I went through one whole day without having one cup of coffee. Of course I think it was worse when I drank caffeinated coffee and I’m really happy that I’m a decaf person now. But I still love my coffee and I don’t plan to give it up anytime soon. I enjoy a fresh cup first thing in the morning as well as a nice flavorful cup in my car. For awhile I was buying coffee on the road a lot, but that can get pretty pricey. That’s why I was so happy when I got the Black & Decker Brew ‘N Go Personal Coffeemaker as a gift recently. Read the rest of this entry »

I love being able to decide what’s for dinner in a matter of moments, sometimes without a trip to the grocery store. Being able to put frozen pork chops into a crockpot and end up with wonderfully creamy pork chops is a real miracle some days. And who would think that something this easy could be this delicious. When you use a really great cut of meat, all the goodness is right there to begin with. But, truthfully, any cut of meat would be great in this recipe. Read the rest of this entry »
