# Selecting a Whole House Water Filter
When selecting a whole house water filter, there are several criteria to look for in order to ensure we buy the correct and good water filter for our house – flow rate, filter size, filter life and port size. We have to determine what flow rate is suitable to the house. Flow rate determines the amount of water available to run the house toilet, shower, dishwasher, etc, and may range from 15 to 40 gallons per minute (gpm) depending on the size of the household. A whole house filter system with flow rate less than 10gpm is not able to maintain uninterrupted water supply then.
As for the filter size, the larger it is the more water will flow in. The ideal filter size for most homes is 4.5” x 20”. The service interval will be longer for a whole house water filter with larger filter size. For filter life, we want it to last as long as possible and still able to maintain good water quality. A good quality whole house water filter can last up to 300,000 gallons in normal municipal water supplies. The ideal port size on a whole house water filter is 1”. This port size generally fits onto most piping in the household.
